Fastenopfer fosters the right to food for disadvantaged population groups in 16 countries. In its activities, Fastenopfer draws its inspiration from the principle of food sovereignty as opposed to food security. The technical term of food security solely implies that people have access to a sufficient amount of nutritious food. This can also include food aid. Food sovereignty, on the other hand, goes somewhat further. It is a political concept and implies the right of all nations to define their own agricultural and food policy. Food sovereignty is geared to small farmers. It demands a socially appropriate trade policy which protects small-scale farmers against agribusiness and the dumping of imports. For example in Burkina Faso. |
